'Halloween II'

The Ringer's Bill Simmons, Chris Ryan, and Van Lathan don't know what death is after rewatching the 1981 return of Michael Myers in 'Halloween II,' starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence.

Cast

Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode

Donald Pleasence as Dr. Sam Loomis

Directed by: Rick Rosenthal

Written by: John Carpenter, Debra Hill

Notes

  • $2.5 million budget, made $25 million at the box office.
  • John Carpenter and Deborah Hill co-wrote the screenplay. Carpenter didn't want to direct – he did Escape from New York instead and handed direction to Rick Rosenthal, but ended up filming some additional violence scenes because he thought the original cut wasn't scary enough.
  • Carpenter was drunk when he came up with the Laurie-is-Michael's-sister twist. Bill ranks it as his #2 worst sequel idea ever, behind Kehoe becoming the Iceman in Another 48 Hours and ahead of Godfather 3's cousin romance.
  • Bill's horror villain GOAT ranking: Myers #1 over Voorhees – 'more realistic, original came first, funnier.' Van argues for Freddy Krueger as the clear #1 due to personality, supernatural dream element, and pizzazz.
  • This is the podcast's third Michael Myers episode (after 'Halloween' and 'Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers').
  • The slasher era (1979-1981) produced an explosion of films that could be made for $400K and gross $20 million: Friday the 13th, Prom Night, Fun House, When a Stranger Calls, Terror Train, He Knows You're Alone, Happy Birthday to Me.
  • Pamela Shoop (the hot tub nurse) was told the set would be closed for her nude scene, but there were 19 crew members standing around. Deborah Hill had to step in and tell her she didn't have to do full frontal.
  • Dana Carvey appears in the scene where Sheriff Brackett finds his daughter's body, but has no speaking lines.

Roger Ebert's review

Quote from Rog's review:

It's a little sad to witness a fall from greatness (...) It is technically a sequel, but it doesn't even attempt to do justice to the original. Instead, it tries to outdo the other violent 'Halloween' rip-offs of the last several years. (...) The plot of 'Halloween II' absolutely depends, of course, on our old friend the Idiot Plot which requires that everyone in the movie behave at all times like an idiot. That's necessary because if anyone were to use common sense, the problem would be solved and the movie would be over.
Most re-watchable scene

Ben Tramer's death was unanimously voted by all 3 hosts as the most rewatchable scene.

The most 1981 thing about this movie
  • A kid walking downtown with a boom box at 11 PM.
  • A Datsun truck.
  • Nurses in old-fashioned outfits with little hats.
  • The razor blade in the apple Halloween urban legend.
  • Turning on a transistor radio to get the news.
  • Walkie talkies.
What aged the best?
  • CR: The structure of saving the setup for 30 minutes, plus the technique of making you horny before disgusting you with violence.
  • Van: The variety of kills – hammer, scalpel, scalding water, hypodermic needle.
  • Bill: Donald Pleasence hosting SNL on Halloween 1981 to promote this movie, during the legendary Fear/Eddie Murphy episode. Also Loomis's repeated "this isn't a man" bit.
Most cinematic shot

CR: Myers appearing behind Nurse Jill when she finds Doctor Mixter with the needle in his eye – Myers just steps into the background.

Best needle drop

"Mr. Sandman" by The Chordettes.

Weak link of the movie
  • CR: Laurie Strode – she's incapacitated the entire film, in a fugue state, with nothing to do.
  • Bill: Dick Warlock as Myers – too short, too stiff, too robotic. The mask doesn't fit his head right. Myers plays like he has CTE from falling off the balcony.
What aged the worst?
  • Bill: Jamie Lee Curtis's wig (she had shorter hair for another movie).
  • CR: The acting and directing – the Marshall's facial expression when Marion Chambers shows up, and the cop driving the car staring blankly when told Laurie is Michael's sister.
  • Van: The fake blood – Annie's slit throat looks super fake on modern screens.
  • Craig: The hot tub scalding scene.
The hottest take award
  • Bill: Laurie Strode's parents are the worst movie parents of all time – worse than the 'Home Alone' parents. They never show up at the hospital the entire night.
  • Van: Michael Myers was radicalized by the OJ trial. He didn't kill any black people on screen until 'Halloween' Resurrection (2002).
Casting what-ifs

None! Bill said he couldn't find any.

Over-acting award

Bill: The old ER doctor, who plays the character as openly drunk.

Best "that guy"
  • Bill: Leo Rossi (Bud, the creepy paramedic – also later played one of the rapists in The Accused).
  • CR: Jeffrey Kramer (the mortician – was also Roy Scheider's deputy in 'Jaws' and 'Jaws 2').
Best "heat check" performance

Bill: Ben Tramer's death scene – hit by a cop car, jackknifed into a van, and incinerated, all in 45 seconds.

Re-casting couch
  • Tom Hanks as Jimmy (the paramedic).
  • Heather Thomas as the blonde nurse.
  • Catherine Bach as the Pamela Shoop character (Nurse Karen).
Half-assed (internet) research
  • They originally considered setting the sequel years later with Myers tracking Laurie to a high-rise apartment building.
  • Morningside Hospital (filming location) at 8711 S Harvard has been torn down; it's now Harvard Yard Senior Apartments.
  • Pamela Shoop said the hot tub water was actually cold and dirty, gave her an ear infection.
  • Carpenter said the original cut was "as scary as Quincy" and they had to reshoot and add scenes.
  • Dick Warlock played two roles: the Shape and the cop who hits Ben Tramer.
  • Carpenter came up with the sister plot twist while drunk.
  • The mask turned yellow because Deborah Hill kept it under her bed and was a heavy smoker.
Apex Mountain

No apex mountain for anyone – not for Myers, Jamie Lee Curtis, or Pleasence. Not the apex of same-night sequels (that's 'Rocky' 2) or slasher-era movies.

Cruise or Hanks?
Hanks wins

Hanks for the paramedic (Jimmy). Bill tried Cruise but couldn't see it.

Scorsese or Spielberg?

Too difficult to determine, since this is Rosenthal imitating Carpenter's style.

What role would Philip Seymour Hoffman play?

The Leo Rossi part (Bud, the creepy paramedic). Like Freddie from 'The Talented Mr. Ripley'.

Picking nits
  • Downtown Haddonfield is still very active at 11 PM on Halloween night.
  • No cops guarding Laurie at the hospital.
  • Nobody reacting to the smell of Ben Tramer's still-smoking burned body.
  • The hot nurse being with the creepy paramedic.
  • Myers breaking into the school to write "Samhain" and stab a family painting while supposedly busy being shot 6 times.
  • Lifting someone in the air with just a scalpel.
  • Myers's hands not burning in the scalding hot tub.
  • Craig: The paramedic making injured Laurie step up into the ambulance without a stretcher.
Sequel, prequel, prestige TV or untouchable?

They've already done everything with this franchise – sequels, reboots, remakes.

Would this movie be better with...?
  • Bill: Sam Jackson as the guy driving the car when Loomis demands they turn around, or as the security guard Mr. Garrett, or even as Loomis himself.
  • CR: Chris Collinsworth as the color commentator type. Byron Mayo as Bud (the hot tub scene).
Just one Oscar, who gets it?

Van: The score (with some hesitation).

(Probably) unanswerable questions
  • Did Sheriff Brackett get divorced after his daughter's death?
  • Did Ben Tramer's parents sue the city of Haddonfield?
  • When Laurie's parents finally reached her, how did that conversation go?
  • What would have been the funniest Dana Carvey use in this movie?
  • CR: The cop who killed Ben Tramer – suspension without pay, or brought right back because they were short-handed?
  • How would Michael know how to drive? How would he know what Samhain is?
  • Craig: Since when do all the hot young people work at a hospital?
What memorabilia would you want (or not want!) from the movie?
  • Bill: The mask from the first two movies – would be worth millions (estimates at least $2 million). The mask that started 50 years of horror movies.
  • Van: The actual mask was listed on eBay in 2012 with an asking price of $1 million.
Best (or worst!) life lessons from the movie

Find your kids when there's a homicidal maniac on the loose in your neighborhood. Have a phone chain.

Best double feature for this movie

CR: 'Halloween' 1 – watch them back to back since the sequel picks up right where the original left off.

Who won the movie?
  • Bill: Michael Myers.
  • CR: Donald Pleasence (Loomis) – he's in the most scenes, goes on an arc, and is incredibly committed to the bit.
Producer review
  • Craig: These are his type of horror films – the perfect sweet spot. The town is charming and warm, the score is fantastic, the unintentional comedy is great, and the movie is 90 minutes.
  • The 'Halloween' franchise basically has a monopoly on horror films set around Halloween.
