Notes

  • The goat, Nancy Meyers. Amanda's auteur theory: if we call Michael Bay an auteur, Nancy Meyers is 1000% one – recognizable visual style, recurring themes, greatest actors, and massive box office influence on design (Airbnb, etc.).
  • Nancy Meyers filmography run-through: Private Benjamin, Irreconcilable Differences, Baby Boom, 'Father of the Bride', I Love Trouble, 'Father of the Bride' Too, Parent Trap, What Women Want, Something's Gotta Give, 'The Holiday', 'It's Complicated', The Intern.
  • Nancy Meyers real estate signature: big rooms with high ceilings, open floor plans, rooms visible behind rooms, lived-in knick-knacks, neutral paint colors, lots of wood/oak, and the kitchens – Bill's wife always comments on them. This one has maybe the best kitchen of all.
  • The movie's engine is Streep wanting to renovate her already-perfect kitchen. Amanda: 'For many years I've been like, it's perfect,' but on rewatch she noticed the storage is crammed.
  • Meryl Streep's incredible 2006-2011 run: Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia, Doubt, Julie & Julia, 'It's Complicated', The Iron Lady – four Oscar nominations, one win. Like Brady's second three Super Bowls.
  • Bill thinks Devil Wears Prada will be Streep's most enduring performance 50 years from now – more than Sophie's Choice.
  • Alec Baldwin reinvented himself in the 2000s as a really funny actor: SNL hosting, 'Along Came Polly', 'The Departed', 30 Rock. This movie is happening during 30 Rock and he's an A-lister again.
  • Mina thinks Baldwin almost runs away with the movie. His 'Home Sweet Home' scene is the hosts' favorite moment. Nancy Meyers likely wrote the role specifically for him.
  • The Nancy Meyers divorce connection: her writing partner/director husband Charles Shyer – they divorced, and the hosts wonder how much real-life material is in her divorce movies.
  • The kids in the movie are 'the happiest divorced kids ever in a movie.' None of them seem damaged, they have no jobs, and they all want to climb into bed with Mom. Bill: 'One of them needs to be slightly fucked up.'
  • The house is in Thousand Oaks in real life, which surprised everyone. Much of the movie was filmed on soundstages in New York.
  • Baldwin used a body double for his nude scene. In the phone call/kiss scene, Baldwin wasn't supposed to kiss Streep – she said the wrong line and they kept it.
  • Bill's big Santa Barbara take: sun doesn't come out until 1:30-2pm, but it's never addressed in movies set there. Mina: 'This is the whitest conversation ever held on Rewatchables.'
  • Craig's food thesis: this is one of the best food movies ever that's not about food. The way Baldwin and Martin each interact with Streep's food reveals their relationships.
  • Nancy Meyers wanted $180M for her next Netflix movie (with Scarlett Johansson) and couldn't agree on budget. Amanda: 'Give Nancy all the money. Hydrangeas cost a lot.'

Categories

Most re-watchable scene
  • Bill: Jane's dinner with friends ('the vagina closed up story'); the bar scene running into Jake through to 'Home Sweet Home' / bikini waxes; 'I'm having an affair with Agnes Adler's husband' (friends screaming); everyone getting stoned; the chocolate croissant scene.
  • Amanda: The plastic surgeon scene ('I think about it regularly'); the hotel bar scene; the second hotel scene with heart attack and Krasinski in the lobby ('I've always had a lot of semen').
  • Mina (winner): The dinner at the bar leading into them having sex – 'they just have such better chemistry than her and Steve Martin. Two actors at the top of their games.'
The most 2009 thing about this movie
  • Bill (winner): Being sad about having nobody to watch The Hills with – 'just trapped you in 2009.'
  • Amanda: Normal-size, pre-superhero John Krasinski being the 7th lead of a movie.
  • Amanda: The title itself – connected to the Facebook relationship status option 'It's Complicated' that had just launched.
What aged the best?
  • Bill: The early loneliness details showing Jane is alone (watching couples in the elevator).
  • Mina: Meryl Streep looks beautiful in this movie. Also, Streep not getting plastic surgery in real life after this movie – 'she famously is anti-plastic surgery and she still looks great.'
  • Mina: Nancy Meyers' female characters aren't the 'uptight trope' – they're successful, chill, quick to smile. 'They don't feel like stereotypes.'
  • Amanda: The title's connection to the Facebook era; also Meryl's golden glow lighting – 'it's a Renaissance painting.'
Most cinematic shot
  • Bill: After the daughter moves out, the wide shot of Jane alone in her house – 'just like a good wide shot where you can see the whole house, but she's just alone.'
  • Mina and Amanda (winner): The smash cut to the sprinkler on the lawn during their second sex scene, then back to Baldwin with the shit-eating grin. 'Just a perfect transition.'
Best needle drop
  • Bill: Tom Petty 'Don't Do Me Like That' or Fine Young Cannibals.
  • Amanda: Tom Petty or 'Benny and the Jets' when she's stoned.
  • Mina: The Beach Boys dancing moment when everyone's looking at each other realizing what's going on.
Weak link of the movie
  • Mina: Steve Martin's character is underwritten and can't compete with Baldwin's charisma. The hosts discuss recasting: Amanda suggests Sam Shepard, Mina suggests Tommy Lee Jones or Bill Murray.
  • Bill: The kids aren't damaged enough – 'these are the happiest divorced kids that have ever been in a movie.' One of them should be slightly fucked up. They have no jobs, climb into bed together, and act like the graduation is the moon landing.
  • Craig: 'The kids make no sense.'
What aged the worst?
  • Bill: 'Are we sure Steve Martin isn't a loser in this movie? He's veering too close toward Loserville.' Also: the youngest son (Hunter Parrish from Weeds) is 'a smiling serial killer, a sociopath – if he became American Psycho 2, I'd be like, that totally makes sense.'
  • Mina: Surprised Steve Martin agreed to the role – 'if I'm Steve Martin, I'm reading this and I'm like, there's not a lot here for me to do.'
Over-acting award
  • Bill: Meryl Streep – '10 laughs too heavy,' but as a compliment. 'She's deliriously happy in this movie.' She dials it up a couple times.
  • Amanda: Meryl, but in a good way. Especially the pot-smoking scene – 'she was acting like she was on acid.'
  • Craig: The twirl when she announces the affair to her friends, hair flying in front of her face.
The hottest take award
  • Amanda: Roast chicken might be the most overrated food in the universe. 'It's fine. There are many really good ways to prepare chicken and many other things you can roast.'
  • Mina: Nancy Meyers' movies prove that old people should be in more stuff – more movies of all genres where leads are over 50. Her oeuvre is a strong case study.
  • Bill: Santa Barbara has the biggest disparity between movies and real life of any location – 'the sun doesn't come out till like 2:30.' Mina: 'This is the whitest conversation ever held on Rewatchables.'
  • Mina (bonus): Keanu Reeves is better in Something's Gotta Give than in The Matrix.
Casting what-ifs
  • Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Michael Douglas, and Tom Hanks were all reportedly considered for Jake.
  • Bill: Tom Hanks should have done 2 more rom-coms in the 21st century – 'just get over yourself.'
  • Amanda's recast for Steve Martin's role: Sam Shepard. 'You've got to steer towards sensitive.' Bill: 'Every woman loves Sam Shepard – Baldwin can't compete with that.'
  • Mina: Tommy Lee Jones (already did a romantic comedy with Meryl) or Bill Murray (quirky goofy architect).
  • Craig: Tom Hanks is the Steve Martin recast.
Best "that guy"

Bill: The guy from Succession who played Ravenhead (the Hitler-loving anchor) – he's the New York City hotel clerk in the opening. 'Nora Dunn's husband in the movie.'

Best "heat check" performance

Lake Bell – 'she's the most in 4 scenes.' Bill: Pedro the little kid.

Re-casting couch
  • Bill: Chris Pratt as the youngest son (his chubby, charming rom-com era – Five Year Engagement). Amanda notes it might overload the NBC comedy night vibe with Krasinski and Baldwin/30 Rock.
  • Bill: Adam Brody in the Krasinski part.
Half-assed (internet) research
  • In the phone call/kiss scene, Baldwin wasn't supposed to kiss Streep – she said the wrong line and they kept it because it was funny.
  • Baldwin said they used a body double for his nude scene.
  • A lot of the movie was filmed in New York (soundstage interiors), not California. The house exterior is in Thousand Oaks. Some Montecito/Santa Barbara for exteriors.
  • The bakery was shot in the Prospect Park Boathouse – not in LA.
Apex Mountain
  • Meryl Streep: Not really – she's just always on top of the mountain. Probably Devil Wears Prada era or early '80s (Sophie's Choice, 'Kramer vs. Kramer').
  • Alec Baldwin: Probably yes – this plus 30 Rock plus SNL hosting all at the same time.
  • Steve Martin: No – late '70s (The Jerk, number-one comedy album, selling out arenas, best SNL host).
  • Nancy Meyers: Something's Gotta Give or 'The Holiday'.
  • His-and-her sinks: 'Has there been more conversation about his-and-her sinks in a movie ever?'
  • Krasinski: Not this, probably A Quiet Place.
Cruise or Hanks?
Hanks wins

Hanks, 1000%. Amanda: 'I don't see Cruise in this movie.' Mina: Cruise in any part 'runs away with it.'

Scorsese or Spielberg?
  • Bill: Spielberg.
  • Amanda: Scorsese – 'give me a gritty version.' Jane's spiraling, the one joint becomes cocaine, the kids are actually screwed up, she's sleeping with the devil. Meryl's already doing the head bob, just for different reasons.
What role would Philip Seymour Hoffman play?
  • Bill: The Steve Martin part.
  • Amanda: The plastic surgeon. 'He would be so funny at that.'
  • Bill: Also young PSH as the youngest kid (since they keep recasting that role).
Picking nits
  • Bill: Why did they break up? The chemistry is clearly still there. He just got 'a little Randy with Agnes'? And why did he marry Agnes?
  • Bill: Krasinski would 100% tell his wife immediately about seeing her parents sneaking into a hotel elevator. 'Nobody's hiding that from their spouse.'
  • Amanda: The butt double is way too smooth for the amount of body hair on the rest of Alec Baldwin. Also: chocolate croissants are usually square, not crescent-shaped.
  • Amanda: Baldwin should have checked the computer screen before standing naked in front of it during the laptop scene.
  • Mina: 'Rich white people in California have gotten this long without smoking pot?' In 2009?
Sequel, prequel, prestige TV or untouchable?
  • Bill: All-black cast version – 'I got kind of excited thinking about it.'
  • Amanda: Would watch a prequel about why they got divorced – 'it would be gnarly, it wouldn't feel as good.'
Just one Oscar, who gets it?

Baldwin for Best Supporting Actor. They checked the 2010 nominees: Christoph Waltz won ('Inglourious Basterds'), but the field also had Stanley Tucci (Lovely Bones), Christopher Plummer, Woody Harrelson, and Matt Damon. 'Baldwin could have snuck in there.'

(Probably) unanswerable questions
  • Bill: Should it be OK to have an affair with your ex-wife? Mina's ruling: if the second wife is who he left her for, green light. If they divorced and he met someone new, not cool.
  • Bill: Does Jake have a job? Where's his office? He has a lot of time to hang out at his ex-wife's driveway.
  • Bill: Is this the Meryl Streep laugh record for a movie? 'Over 120 laughs, like 1.1-1.2 laughs per minute.'
  • Amanda: What's in the noodle thing they fight over at the end?
What memorabilia would you want (or not want!) from the movie?
  • Amanda: Meryl's garden hat – 'I'm in the market for a wider-brimmed hat.'
  • Bill: Wouldn't want any memorabilia from this movie. Maybe the fake joints or the bakery sign.
Best (or worst!) life lessons from the movie

It's OK to hook up with your ex-husband if he's with the person he had the affair with. Mina's rule: the second wife knew what she was buying into.

Best double feature for this movie
  • Mina: 'Kramer vs. Kramer' – 'the Meryl divorce classics.' Warning: do NOT double-feature with Something's Gotta Give ('they're too similar and this movie does not benefit from the comparison').
  • Amanda: Julie & Julia (same year, also Meryl Streep – compare Nancy Meyers and Nora Ephron).
  • Bill: Irreconcilable Differences (not available anywhere).
Who won the movie?

Alec Baldwin won the movie (unanimous). Mina: 'I was shocked by how good he is in it.'

Producer review

Craig: Baldwin. 'Better this time than when I had last watched it. This movie is like more about food than any movie that's not explicitly about food. One of the best food movies ever, and it's not really about food.' Suggested 'The Other Woman' as alternative title.
