Notes

  • The hosts discuss how 'Mission: Impossible' has replaced James Bond as the preeminent blockbuster action franchise.
  • Chris says this is 'no movie I enjoy more while understanding less.' All three hosts admit they have no idea what's actually going on plot-wise but the stunts carry everything.
  • Tom Cruise learned to HALO jump (hundreds of practice jumps), earned a helicopter license, and trained for months to climb Preikestolen in Norway. Stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood said 'every time he got in the car at the end of the day, he was asleep within five minutes.'
  • Cruise broke his ankle doing the Tate Modern jump. They kept the take – you can see it happen on screen. It was an $80 million insurance hit. He came back in nine weeks.
  • Simon Pegg said it was 'a daily stress going to work with him because you don't know if you were going to see him tomorrow.'
  • Rebecca Ferguson was seven months pregnant by the time they finished filming.
  • The HALO jump had to be filmed at dusk, so they could only do one jump per day. A cameraman skydived next to Cruise with a 20-pound RED Weapon camera with an IMAX lens on his helmet, staying within three feet.
  • The Paris motorcycle chase used 70 stunt drivers – no CGI.
  • The 15-minute nuclear bomb countdown at the end actually lasts over 22 minutes on screen.
  • Christopher McQuarrie was the first director to do two 'Mission: Impossible' films. He and Cruise have done nine projects together.
  • $178 million budget, made $791.7 million worldwide.
  • McQuarrie wanted Jeremy Renner for a cameo where he gets killed in the beginning, but Renner declined due to Avengers: Endgame.
  • The bathroom fight originally featured a third famous actor, but he 'couldn't keep up with Cruise and Cavill' in a fight evaluation.
  • The Cavill mustache controversy: McQuarrie wouldn't let Cavill shave it for Justice League reshoots, so DC had to digitally remove it.
  • The inspiration for the Paris car chase is the short film 'Rendezvous' (C'etait un Rendezvous) from the 1970s.
  • Craig calls Cruise 'more of an athlete than an actor at this point' and compares him to LeBron and Brady for career longevity.
  • This was the last Rewatchables episode of 2022.

Categories

Most re-watchable scene
  • The fake CNN broadcast / fake Wolf Blitzer scene to trick the nuclear physicist.
  • The HALO jump scene.
  • The entire Paris sequence – pushing the car into the water, motorcycle chase, crashing into the boat.
  • Craig: The rooftop run – 'the greatest Cruise run of his career,' a 20-second uncut sprint.
  • Chris: The Paris bathroom fight – Cruise, Cavill, and Liang Yang destroying everything.
  • The ending sequence – helicopter fight, cabin fight, cliff fight, rock climbing.
What aged the best?
  • Alec Baldwin as the 10-minute man – always great in small doses.
  • Paris as a filming location.
  • Vanessa Kirby doing Vanessa Redgrave from the first movie – 'That's your mom!'
  • Rebecca Ferguson – 'She's just always aged the best for me.'
  • The strong group of women: Kirby, Ferguson, Monaghan.
  • The score from Lorne Balfe.
  • The 'Eyes Wide Shut' callback at the funeral/gala scene.
Best needle drop

The 'Mission: Impossible' theme song over the opening credits.

Weak link of the movie

Wes Bentley as Erik (Julia's new husband) – completely oblivious, inexplicable presence. 'Now really funny because he's Yellowstone Wes Bentley.'

What aged the worst?
  • Wes Bentley's character Erik.
  • The Luther speech explaining why Julia and Ethan split up – 'that speech is fucking terrible.'
  • Sean Harris's fake-looking beard as Solomon Lane.
  • Ving Rhames has clearly slowed down.
  • The title 'Fallout' – falls short compared to Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation.
Most cinematic shot
  • The camera falling backwards out of the plane with Cruise during the HALO jump.
  • The silent flash-forward where Ethan imagines killing all the cops.
The hottest take award
  • Chris: Is this movie diminished by 'Top Gun: Maverick'? Maverick is more streamlined with real emotional depth.
  • Bill: Tom Cruise is the greatest close talker of our generation.
  • Craig: Henry Cavill is way too hot to be an incel/anarchist.
Casting what-ifs
  • Jeremy Renner was supposed to be in the movie but couldn't due to Avengers: Endgame.
  • The bathroom fight originally had a third famous actor, but he couldn't keep up with Cruise and Cavill.
  • After MI:3, the franchise was going to transition to Renner, but Cruise changed his mind.
Best "that guy"
  • Sean Harris as Solomon Lane.
  • Wes Bentley – 'before Yellowstone, he was a that guy.'
  • Liang Yang (the bathroom fighter) – a stuntman they decided to use as an actor.
Best "heat check" performance
  • Vanessa Kirby – only in about three scenes but 'throwing like a hundred.' A revelation.
  • Alec Baldwin – the ultimate 10-minute man.
Over-acting award

Ving Rhames – 'Ving definitely put a stamp on this performance,' particularly the Luther speech about Julia.

Re-casting couch
  • Solomon Lane: Joaquin Phoenix, Michael Shannon, Benedict Cumberbatch, or Ewan McGregor instead of Sean Harris.
  • Jon Bernthal for the Wes Bentley part.
Half-assed (internet) research
  • The Cavill mustache saga – Justice League had to digitally remove it at great expense.
  • The HALO jump used a RED Weapon camera with an IMAX lens mounted on a stuntman's helmet.
  • Cruise drove the BMW M5 himself, nailed the 180 emergency brake spin in three takes.
  • Rebecca Ferguson was seven months pregnant during filming.
  • The inspiration for the Paris chase is the short film 'Rendezvous' from the 1970s.
Apex Mountain
  • 'Mission: Impossible' franchise: Probably still the first movie.
  • Cruise as an insane person: 'This might be Apex Mountain' for insane Cruise stories from a set.
  • Bathroom fight scenes: 'This might be the greatest bathroom fight scene I've ever seen.'
  • HALO jumps: This and 'Point Break'.
  • Christopher McQuarrie: This and 'Top Gun: Maverick' together, though 'The Usual Suspects' is also notable.
Picking nits
  • No bruises for anybody after the bathroom fight.
  • The 15-minute nuclear countdown lasts 22+ minutes on screen.
  • Why did they need to HALO jump to get into the nightclub? They just change into suits and walk in.
  • Diminishing returns on the mask switcheroos – too many of them.
  • They can build faces and do HALO jumps but can't break a six-digit phone passcode.
Would this movie be better with...?

Jon Bernthal replacing Wes Bentley as the new husband – 'ten times better.'

Just one Oscar, who gets it?

Wade Eastwood, the stunt coordinator – leads to a discussion about the Oscars needing a Best Stunt category.

(Probably) unanswerable questions
  • Does Cruise want to die? Does he actually have a death wish?
  • What city would you choose for the single best car chase location?
What memorabilia would you want (or not want!) from the movie?
  • Craig: The plutonium ball or the detonator.
  • Bill: The BMW M5.
  • Chris: The copy of The Odyssey (the self-destructing message).
Best (or worst!) life lessons from the movie
  • Stay vigilant – if your wife's mysterious ex shows up with a fake job and there's plutonium and helicopters, have some questions.
  • 'The great suffering brings great peace' – from the John Lark manifesto.
Best double feature for this movie
  • Rogue Nation – the direct predecessor with Solomon Lane.
  • 'John Wick: Chapter 2' – the only thing challenging MI in stunt coordination.
Who won the movie?

Tom Cruise – unanimous.
