Notes
- 28% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 130 reviews, but made $102.7 million on a $12 million budget.
- The three leads (Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown) were cast through a nationwide open call.
- Directed by music video director Nima Nourizadeh, hand-picked by producer Todd Phillips.
- The hosts proposed renaming the 'Slow Ride' needle drop category to the 'Pursuit of Happiness' needle drop category after this episode.
- Found footage format – Dax Flame's character films the entire party as a documentary.
- Miles Teller has a small role before becoming a major star.
- Jacoby considers this one of the greatest films ever made and uses 'Pursuit of Happiness' (Steve Aoki remix) as a personal antidepressant.
Categories
- The Pursuit of Happiness montage – right after the cops leave, everything is huge but still going well. Jacoby says it's 'far and away' the winner.
- The final act when the party spirals completely out of control with the flamethrower.
- T-Rick driving the Mercedes into the pool.
- Miles Teller being in this movie before becoming a major star.
- Wheelchair Robert – gets mentioned early ('even wheelchair Robert got a hand job') but never shows up at the party. The hosts want a director's cut with his side story.
- The dog – one of the great movie dogs. Even the dog gets laid.
- Jimmy Kimmel's cameo at the end.
- The Santa Claus filled with ecstasy – hilarious callback when Miles Teller destroys it.
- The soundtrack – in the running for best soundtrack of the last 10 years.
- The freeze frame 'where are they now' ending.
- The nerds-trying-to-get-popular format – always works.
- The disclaimer at the beginning – weird for a comedy.
- Costa's inappropriate language throughout.
- The Playboy 'Pack 10 issue' reference – Playboy doesn't even publish nudity anymore.
- Dax filming Thomas and Alexis hooking up in the closet – 'probably illegal.'
- Winner: 'Pursuit of Happiness' by Kid Cudi (Steve Aoki remix) – the perfect moment at the perfect part of the party.
- Runner-up: 'Heads Will Roll' (A-Trak remix) by Yeah Yeah Yeahs – plays during the ecstasy sequence. Any other movie, it wins.
- The entire soundtrack is stacked: Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Machine Gun Kelly, Lil Jon's 'Get Out of Your Mind.'
The roof shot – 'look at what we've done.'
- Jacoby: No weak links. It's a perfect film.
- Craig: The mom – looked like the beginning of a porno with Costa at the fridge.
- Bill: Needed 15% more from J.B.
- Craig: The party was worth it for Thomas Kub – he gained confidence, was voted most likely to succeed.
- Bill: Project XX (the college sequel four years later) is one of the biggest missed sequel opportunities of the last decade. The movie made over $100 million and the path was obvious.
- Jacoby: This is the greatest piece of art that our species has ever accomplished.
- The high school bully Brendan – 'the only one who was actually acting,' seemed like he came out of 1974.
- T-Rick goes a little hard – 'Give me back my fucking gnome.'
- The dad's phone call – everyone in the movie is on 11.
Craig wanted a low-level pop star to show up and perform at the party – like a Bobby Brackins, someone who was weirdly popular in 2012.
T-Rick (Rick Shapiro) – used to be a magician, drives his Mercedes into the pool, returns with a flamethrower. Everyone in this movie is a That Guy.
- Every cast member except Miles Teller – the IMDBs are pretty grim for everyone after this.
- Alexis Knapp – ended up in all three 'Pitch Perfect' movies, probably did the best.
- North Pasadena – arguable Apex Mountain as a movie location.
- Movie parties – if you did the bracket, this is definitely a one-seed. Animal House, House Party (1990) are the competition.
- Ecstasy in a movie – no downside, no hangover, everyone's fine the next day.
- Roof jumps – at least in the final four (Almost Famous is the go-to).
- Bouncy castles – best use of a bouncy castle in a movie.
- Jonah Hill ripoff characters – the peak and the valley.
- Sweater vests.
The zipline – way more complicated than they make it look, and they never work.
- Wayne Jenkins playing one of the cops – 'Wayne Jenkins is undefeated in this category.'
- Samuel L. Jackson would have been fun.
- Jacoby: Best Film Editing – every montage hits perfectly, the found footage, the music editing. 'Argo' won that year; 'Project X' could have bumped one of the nominees.
- Bill: Best Original Song for 'Pursuit of Happiness' – 'Skyfall' (Adele) won that year.
- Why was Wheelchair Robert not at the party?
- Wouldn't the dog have died?
- Wouldn't T-Rick have to pay for most of the damage since he burned it down with the flamethrower?
- Did T-Rick live? (Yes, shown on a stretcher.)
- Would Euphoria happen without this movie? Did 'Project X' pave the way visually?
- Bill's son: Why didn't you show me this movie sooner?
- Bill: Animal House and 'Project X' – the bookends, 25 years apart.
- Jacoby: 'Project X' twice.
- 'Risky Business' or Revenge of the Nerds also appropriate.
- Craig: Costa's chalice – carry it around every time you have friends over. Worth $5,000 to Jacoby.
- Bill: The crispy minivan or one of the backup Santa Claus props.
- Jacoby: The flamethrower or the double-middle-finger gnome.
- The tequila gun was a popular runner-up.
- Bill: Parents should never go anywhere when they have kids between 14 and 18.
- Craig: Don't go to your neighbors and tell them you're going to have a party – it doesn't work.
- Jacoby: Don't go chasing waterfalls – Kirby is the real one, Alexis will be on to a college guy next week.
- Bill: The soundtrack / music, and David Jacoby – he's talked about this movie more than anyone probably ever.
- Jacoby: Kid Cudi – that song in that moment hit so hard.
- Craig: The music, or just the fact that this movie was made – all of us. Humanity won.
- Craig: The sequel is so easy – Costa's at Chico State, Thomas gets out of prison and visits for Costa's 21st birthday.
- Jacoby: Copy and paste format with new characters, like White Lotus.
