Roger Ebert's review

Quote from Rog's review:

Indecent Proposal is just the kind of movie you can really get involved in, if you give it a chance and don't go all prickly on it.
  • Said the movie 'is deliberately designed to place the viewer in the position of assessing his or her own ideas about marital fidelity.'
  • Called it 'artificial and manipulative' but said 'that's why we line up at the ticket window.'
Most re-watchable scene
  • Vegas shopping scene into the craps table sequence – 'The dress is for sale. I'm not.'
  • The billiard scene where Redford makes the million-dollar offer.
  • The contract/Oliver Platt lawyer scene with the John Garfield clause.
What aged the best?
  • Going to Vegas as a desperation move as a movie device.
  • Peak Demi Moore – one of the best-looking actresses of the last 35 years.
  • Oliver Platt's lawyer character as an audience avatar injecting comic relief.
Best needle drop

Sade's 'No Ordinary Love' during the waterbed/cash pile sex scene.

Most cinematic shot
  • Demi Moore kissing the dice at the craps table.
  • David walking in front of wall of TVs showing horse racing that transforms into images of Gage and Diana.
Weak link of the movie
  • David showing up at the charity auction and offering a million dollars for a hippo – 'one of the dumbest scenes, probably the 90s'.
  • The entire second half of the movie doesn't match the first half.
What aged the worst?
  • Woody's high school wig in the flashback; Demi playing a high school freshman with braces.
  • The portrayal of billionaires as likable/heroic – would be much darker now.
  • Having sex on piles of cash.
The hottest take award

The movie needs a murder – David dies under mysterious circumstances, Diana suspects Gage did it.

Casting what-ifs
  • Originally designed as a starring vehicle for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman with Warren Beatty as the billionaire.
  • Julia Roberts was first offered the Diana role but turned it down.
  • Woody Harrelson walked away from Benny & Joon (was sued); Johnny Depp ended up in that instead.
Over-acting award

Woody Harrelson – throwing the wine bottle into the fridge and several other dialed-up moments.

Best "that guy"
  • Seymour Cassel as Shackleford (Gage's driver/assistant).
  • Billy Bob Thornton as Day Tripper.
Re-casting couch
  • Diana: Sydney Sweeney; John Gage: Brad Pitt.
  • David: Paul Mescal or Kieran Culkin; gender-swapped Gage: Nicole Kidman.
Half-assed (internet) research
  • Budget $38 million, made $266 million worldwide.
  • Demi Moore got final cut on her sex scenes; the $5,000 dress was Thierry Mugler and became a fashion sensation.
  • Simpsons did a 'Half Decent Proposal' parody in 2002.
Apex Mountain
  • Demi Moore – coming off Ghost and 'A Few Good Men', paved way for her $20M Striptease deal.
  • Woody Harrelson – coming off 'White Men Can't Jump', last season of Cheers.
  • Thierry Mugler – the dress became iconic.
Picking nits
  • Billiard ball continuity errors during the pool scene.
  • Billionaires don't gamble at common craps tables; no casino would front a $1M bet at a public table.
  • Diana is supposedly a real estate agent but doesn't understand what 'assets' means.
Sequel, prequel, prestige TV or untouchable?
  • Could work as a White Lotus-style season.
  • Gender swap or gay relationship would be the modern approach.
(Probably) unanswerable questions
  • What are all the clauses in the contract? What are the boundaries of 'the act'?
  • Has Shackleford actually killed someone?
  • Did Shackleford plant Gage's business card in Diana's wallet?
Best double feature for this movie

'Unfaithful' (Bill) or 'Fatal Attraction' (Mallory).

What memorabilia would you want (or not want!) from the movie?
  • The waterbed with the cash.
  • The two-headed coin.
Best (or worst!) life lessons from the movie
  • Everything's for sale.
  • Location, location, location (beachfront property).
Who won the movie?

Mallory: Redford; Bill: Demi Moore; Craig says Gage is a 'fucking loser' – an incel with a fake coin.

Producer review

Craig Horlbeck.
