Notes

  • Budget: $57 million. Box office: $153 million.
  • Keanu turned down $11 million for Speed 2 to do this movie instead.
  • Pacino turned the movie down five times; Keanu took a pay cut so they could afford Pacino.
  • Charlize Theron was 21 when they made the movie.
  • Tony Gilroy said the movie was shot in Trump's 'shit bag apartment'; Trump would pop by the set every day to 'try to see Charlize.'
  • The joggers chasing Eddie Barzoon wear the colors of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
  • Part of Courtroom Month on The Rewatchables.
  • Devil's Advocate was Pacino's 5th highest-grossing movie of his career.

Categories

Most re-watchable scene
  • Bill: The outdoor roof terrace scene where Keanu meets Pacino – 'I watch every time this movie's on and I know we're around the scene.'
  • Van: The opening pedophile trial cross-examination – 'quite a way to start the movie.'
  • Chris: The 'Look, but don't touch' speech in the last half hour.
  • Also: Pacino speaks Spanish on the subway – 'Invigorating!'; Eddie Barzoon's death during a Pacino monologue; Charlize's suicide scene.
What aged the best?
  • Charlize Theron's career trajectory – she was 21, turned down Showgirls, went on to become a major star.
  • Don King cameo; all the New York cameos.
  • The office building and apartments looking amazing.
  • Van: DOJ investigations / trading paper stuff – 'every time DOJ is investigating.'
  • 90s New York City.
Best needle drop

Paint It Black by the Rolling Stones at the ending – 'there's really not another one' and 'there's no real music' otherwise in the film.

Weak link of the movie

Chris: Some of the special effects – 'the face changing hasn't really aged that well.'

What aged the worst?
  • Keanu's Southern accent – Bill: 'I had that number one.' Van: 'He can be from Gainesville and not sound like Elmer Fudd.'
  • Jeffrey Jones (Eddie Barzoon) – his real-life criminal offenses make his presence uncomfortable.
  • Craig T. Nelson's alibi of having sex for 3.5 hours pre-Viagra.
  • Pacino's teeth/veneers.
Roger Ebert's review

Quote from Rog's review:

Devil's Advocate is neither fish nor fowl. It's not a serious film about its subject, nor is it quite a dark comedy.
The hottest take award
  • Bill: 'Keanu is the greatest bad actor of the last 35 years.' There's a charisma about him – 'I always feel like somebody could have played the part better. But I genuinely love him.'
  • Chris: Once Marianne is dead, you're better off just taking the devil's offer – 'chief attorney general for Satan with a hot half sister girlfriend... or you can go back to Gainesville and sling Saturns.'
Casting what-ifs
  • Joel Schumacher and Brad Pitt almost made this in 1994. Van: 'If Brad Pitt is in this movie, he gets nominated.'
  • Johnny Depp would have been really good at this point.
  • Pacino turned the movie down five times.
  • Jack Nicholson could have worked as Milton.
Over-acting award
  • Craig T. Nelson.
  • Chris: Charlize – 'She's going nuts.'
  • Pacino for the whole movie.
Best "that guy"

Winner: Chris Bauer ('Machine') – all three agree. Incredible late-90s run: 'Face/Off', Devil's Advocate, 8mm, 'High Fidelity', 61*, 81 episodes of True Blood.

Best "heat check" performance

Chris: Delroy Lindo as Philippe Moyez.

Re-casting couch
  • Replace Jeffrey Jones as Eddie Barzoon – Bill suggests William H. Macy.
  • Van: Tom Skerritt as Cullen replacing Craig T. Nelson.
Half-assed (internet) research
  • Copyright lawsuit over one of the sculptures in the film – had to be edited out of future releases.
  • The outdoor patio was on the 50th floor, actual stage 8 feet from edge.
  • The Roy Jones Jr. fight was real – filmed October 4, 1996, IBF super middleweight title.
  • The empty street scene was shot on a Sunday at 7:30 AM on 57th Street.
  • Connie Nielsen had only been in America for one month when she landed the part.
  • Tony Gilroy: Trump would pop by the set every day to 'try to see Charlize' while 'the entire crew was laughing at him.'
Apex Mountain
  • Satan on film – all three agree: 'I think it is for the devil on film.'
  • Roy Jones Junior – 'yes, height of his powers.'
Picking nits
  • Speed of cases flying by; would have loved more courtroom time.
  • Kevin Lomax is a horrible husband.
  • The mom has sex with the devil and doesn't change at all.
  • Judge allows evidence with no discovery.
(Probably) unanswerable questions
  • What does the mom know? Does she recognize Pacino/Milton?
  • Does the Antichrist really come from half-siblings having sex?
  • If they had stunt cast Trump as Cullen, does Trump become president?
  • Is the ending on a loop ('Groundhog Day'-style)?
What memorabilia would you want (or not want!) from the movie?
  • Van: The box cutter from the subway scene.
  • Chris: Roy Jones Junior tickets; the controversial sculpture.
Best (or worst!) life lessons from the movie
  • Free will – 'stop blaming other people, it's all your choice.'
  • 'Don't ignore your wife.'
Sequel, prequel, prestige TV or untouchable?

Bill: 'Pretty obvious prestige TV show' but worries it would end up on Showtime. Needs HBO-level treatment.

Best double feature for this movie
  • Bill: '...And Justice for All' (Pacino courtroom movie).
  • Van: Bedazzled (2000, Elizabeth Hurley as the Devil).
Just one Oscar, who gets it?

Van: The script (Tony Gilroy's screenplay).

Who won the movie?

Al Pacino – unanimous. Bill: 'Not his teeth, but the rest of Al Pacino.'

Producer review

Isaiah Blakely: 'It's not my favorite film so far... I don't really do Satan.'
