Notes
- Budget: $52 million. Worldwide gross: $352 million.
- Nearly all of Frank Abagnale's autobiography has been debunked.
- The real FBI agent was named Joseph Shea, who didn't want to be depicted – Carl Hanratty is a composite character.
- Spielberg invented all the father-son stuff; the real Abagnale never saw his father again after running away.
- Leo was 27 playing a 16-year-old.
- Gangs of New York and 'Catch Me If You Can' came out within 5 days of each other (both starring Leo).
- Frank Abagnale Jr. has a cameo as the French officer who arrests Frank on Christmas Eve.
- 157 different locations; much of Miami/Atlanta was actually shot in different parts of California.
Categories
- Bill: Frank pretends to be the substitute teacher – 'My name is Mr. Abagnale.' Also the Hollywood Tropicana Hotel scene where Carl almost catches Frank.
- Sean: The eight stewardesses sequence – trying out at the high school, interviewing them, choosing them, the airport escape.
- Also discussed: Frank becoming a Pan Am pilot (the whole sequence of figuring it out), the FBI crashing the engagement party.
- 2002 Leo – 'the seeds are there for this is going to be a guy who matters.' The beginning of his 20+ year run as the most impressive movie star.
- The cavalcade of young actresses who went on to be famous: Ellen Pompeo, Jennifer Garner, Elizabeth Banks, Amy Adams.
- The con man process stuff – toy planes in the bathtub to make Pan Am seals, learning about MICR numbers.
- Christopher Walken and Leo as father and son.
- The Saul Bass-inspired opening credits.
- Bill: 'The Christmas Song' (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire).
- Sean: 'Come Fly With Me.'
- Chris: 'You Really Got Me' at the Atlanta apartment.
- Chris: The John Williams score itself – 'Escapades for Alto Sax.'
Unanimous: Tom Hanks' accent. Bill: 'Just be Tom Hanks. Why are you talking like this?' The character is a composite, not a real person, so there was no reason for the accent. Hanratty is supposed to be from Chicago but Hanks does some unidentifiable accent.
- Nearly all of Frank Abagnale's story has been debunked.
- Chris: Writing checks – 'It's fucking amazing that that used to be a thing.'
- Los Angeles motel inns – the Tropicana is 'just a motel.'
- Sean: This is the first great Leo performance – prior movies relied on the filmmaking style; 'if he's not good, this movie is nothing.'
- Bill: Amy Adams is bad in this movie – 'completely over the top.' Also: Amy Adams is overrated more broadly (six Oscar nominations seems 'insane').
- Bill: The Hanks GOAT argument has some cracks – 'he's had some bad accent movies' and a rough stretch post-2002.
- James Gandolfini was originally locked in to play Carl Hanratty. Chris: 'This is a better movie with James Gandolfini.'
- David Fincher was attached in 2000, dropped out for 'Panic Room'.
- Gore Verbinski was going to direct with Leo, Gandolfini, Ed Harris as Walken's part, and Chloe Sevigny as Brenda.
- Johnny Depp – Spielberg apparently wanted him at one point for Frank.
- Bill: 2003 Scarlett Johansson for Amy Adams' part.
- Chris: Today's version – Timothee Chalamet as Frank with Leo as Tom Hanks (the aging actor taking the supporting role).
- Bill: Sterling K. Brown as today's Tom Hanks part.
Amy Adams – both the overacting and 'doing their own thing' awards.
- Nathalie Baye (the French mom) – 'a veteran of Jean-Luc Godard.'
- Sean: James Brolin.
- Chris: Elizabeth Banks.
- The rights were bought in 1980 by Norman Lear and Bud Yorkin after seeing Abagnale on the Tonight Show.
- Production passed through Columbia, Hollywood Pictures, Paramount, then DreamWorks in 1997.
- The real Abagnale never saw his father again after running away – Spielberg invented the father-son stuff.
- Frank Abagnale Jr. appears in the film as the French officer who arrests Frank.
- Janusz Kaminski screened Maysles Brothers documentaries to prepare.
- Leo: No – 'Titanic' is his apex. But this is the beginning of the run.
- Spielberg, Hanks: Not this movie.
- Christopher Walken: Not this – probably Deer Hunter or 1993-94 range (SNL hosting, 'True Romance', 'Pulp Fiction').
- Pan Am Airlines: Maybe.
Bill: 'Clearly a better prestige show. If it was like Poker Face, what's this guy going to do this week?' Maybe 1-2 seasons.
- Carl's not going to look at Frank's wallet for five minutes in the hotel room.
- The Atlanta to New Orleans to Miami to France transition is very choppy.
- How did Hanks get to France after being told he can't go to Europe?
- Frank being a doctor – 'once you have a guy's tibia sticking out, you're probably like, I don't know how to fix this.'
- How did he cheat on the bar exam? 'I still am not buying he studied for two weeks.'
- Could you really escape from an airplane through the toilet?
- Why is Tom Hanks using that accent?
- Sean: The Fabelmans.
- Bill: Gangs of New York (came out five days apart, same Leo era).
- Bill: The Aviator.
- Chris: The Aston Martin Silver 1963 DBS (~$25 million car).
- Chris: Leo's sunglasses from the Miami airport scene.
- Bill: The suitcase of cash.
Bill: 'Check forging is my favorite of all the crimes' – if you're going to be a criminal, forge checks (no real victims, just banks).
Quote from Rog's review:
“This is not a major Spielberg film, although it is an effortlessly watchable one.”
'DiCaprio, who in recent films has played dark and troubled characters, is breezy and charming here, playing a boy who discovers what he's good at and does it.'
Unanimous: Leo won the movie. Walken got the Oscar nomination but Leo is better.
