Quote from Rog's review:
“Bill Murray's best movie since Ghostbusters.”
Siskel didn't really like it – said Dreyfuss gave too angry of a performance and it ruined the movie for him.
- Winner: The dinner scene – 'Is this corn hand-shucked?' (Bill Simmons).
- Winner: Dreyfuss blowing his top – 'He's not gone. He's never gone.' – then opening the door (Sean Fennessey).
- First therapy scene with Murray and Dreyfuss – 'What if my heart stops beating?'
- Bob waiting for the doctor to call at the diner.
- Bob teaches Siggy to dive – the whole diving sequence.
- Bob gets off the bus and screams 'Dr. Leo Marvin!' in the middle of town – and it works.
- Dr. Marvin's Wagoneer – great to see those '80s Wagoneers.
- Julie Hagerty – comic genius from Airplane! to Lost in America to Marriage Story.
- Dreyfuss's wardrobe – his summer vacation outfits are epic.
- The 'Don't hassle me, I'm local' t-shirt.
- The era of mainstream American comedies with movie stars – high concept, easy watch, 25 of these between 1987-1994.
- The movie can be viewed as Bob being a sociopath who steals a guy's family, tortures everyone, drives Dr. Marvin insane until he's catatonic – yet Bob is our hero.
- Dr. Marvin goes completely insane and becomes a murderer – wouldn't be played for laughs today.
- The movie's commentary on psychiatry – the most messed up person is the psychiatrist, which is a dated take given modern views on mental health.
- Woody Allen was approached to play Dr. Leo Marvin, considered to direct and possibly co-write – he said no.
- Patrick Stewart was also approached for Dr. Marvin.
- Robin Williams was the first choice for Bob but they couldn't pull it off.
- Phil Hartman would have been great as the Dreyfuss character (Van Lathan).
Winner: Richard Dreyfuss – he really dials it up a couple of times.
- Winner: The Guttmans – the diner owners, co-winners (Bill Simmons).
- Tom Aldredge as Mr. Guttman – also Carmela's father on The Sopranos.
- Reg E. Cathey (Carcetti's guy from The Wire / Querns on Oz) – in one scene.
Bill Murray – this is a Bill Murray vehicle, he is the center of the conversation, genius at the center of it.
- Tiffani-Amber Thiessen as the daughter Anna if they wanted to go younger/high school age.
- All-black cast version: Sterling K. Brown as Dr. Leo Marvin, Sanaa Lathan as the wife, JB Smoove as Bob (Van Lathan), Tracy Morgan as Bob (Sean Fennessey).
- When they blew up the house, they built a three-quarter-size model replica on a different lot.
- Steven Spielberg allegedly spent $250,000 campaigning for Murray to get an Oscar nomination.
- Murray and Dreyfuss did not get along – Murray told Dreyfuss 'Everyone hates you. You are tolerated' and threw a glass ashtray at him.
- Charlie Korsmo was the original choice for T2 but did 'What About Bob?' instead; later got a physics degree from MIT and a JD from Yale.
- Richard Dreyfuss sued Disney years later for back pay/royalties.
- Bill Murray: No.
- Richard Dreyfuss: No.
- Charlie Korsmo: Yes, as an actor (his post-acting achievements are higher though).
- Julie Hagerty: No.
- Death therapy: Yes, apex of death therapy as a concept.
- Patient-shrink movies: No, probably Analyze This.
- Bob's OCD craziness kind of comes and goes depending on the scene – can't leave his house but then is fine with strangers.
- The Guttmans are always around – they run a diner but are constantly in a fishing boat with no fishing poles across the lake.
- What was Dr. Marvin's plan when he tried to blow Bob up? Nobody has ever committed suicide by blowing themselves up in the woods with black powder.
- July 31st to Labor Day is a very long vacation for a psychiatrist – 35 days away from patients.
- More of a movie than a show – the premise is basically one joke for two hours, hard to sustain over 10 episodes.
- In Treatment was kind of similar, tracking patient progress over years.
- Was Leo a murderer? Should he have gone to jail for attempted murder?
- Was Bob's previous doctor foisting Bob on Dreyfuss one of the all-time best foists?
- Why wasn't there a sequel? (The stars hated each other).
- The 'Don't hassle me, I'm local' t-shirt (Bill Simmons).
- The puppets Dr. Marvin uses (Van Lathan).
- The Wagoneer (Sean Fennessey).
Winner: Bill Murray – unanimous.
