'The Program'

The Ringer's Bill Simmons, Ryen Russillo, and Kyle Brandt "put the women and children to bed and go lookin' for dinner" after rewatching the 1993 sports drama 'The Program,' starring Craig Sheffer, Omar Epps, James Caan, and Halle Berry.

Notes

  • $20 million budget, $23 million box office – probably lost money.
  • The famous deleted scene: Joe Kane and friends lie in traffic as cars speed by; two young men died allegedly imitating this, scene was cut from all subsequent releases.
  • Filmed at University of South Carolina; halftime footage shot at real South Carolina vs. Tennessee game on October 31.
  • They had 16 minutes at halftime to film action for three games.
  • On the last play, the USC quarterback stand-in fumbled for real (not scripted); he picked it up and threw a sidearm pass to Omar Epps who caught it.
  • Latimer based on real person Tommy Chaikin (Sports Illustrated 'The Nightmare of Steroids' 1988 article).
  • Michigan agreed to be in the movie but only on condition they win – 'the most Michigan thing ever'.
  • Football scenes used NFL Films cinematographers with long lenses and slow motion – revolutionary for the time.
  • David Ward wanted Johnny Depp for Joe Kane; Depp declined, not a big sports fan.

Roger Ebert's review

Quote from Rog's review:

By the film's end, I found myself simultaneously hoping that ESU would win its big game and that the school would pull the plug on its football program.
Most re-watchable scene
  • First practice sequence – Darnell's first run, 'Are you hurt or are you injured?' speech, Welcome to the Jungle, bull-in-the-ring, Latimer pressing 465.
  • Latimer's 'what does football mean to you' speech the night before the big game.
  • The entire second half of the final game – Caan pep talk, Griffin's block, Latimer's one-stop, Darnell's punt return.
  • Fourth and goal at Iowa – Latimer's goal-line stand (Russillo's pick).
What aged the best?
  • Latimer as a character – his influence on high school football culture (face painting, neck rolls, skull paint).
  • The quote: 'When was the last time 80,000 people showed up to watch a kid do a damn chemistry experiment?'
  • Darnell's theory for cheating with Halle Berry: 'Just go where white people go'.
  • The jock douchebag adrenaline factor – nailed early 90s football player culture.
  • The 'Kane is Able' bumper sticker.
What aged the worst?
  • The Latimer sexual assault scene – way rougher than remembered, would be handled differently in 2020.
  • James Caan's performance – 'playing the coach like the coach had a mild stroke right before the season'.
  • Craig Sheffer being 33 playing a college junior; Halle Berry being 27 playing a sophomore.
  • The booster dad dropping charges on the sexual assault – unrealistic.
  • The ending being too Disney – Ray Griffin going from 'fuck you' to changing the play within 90 minutes.
Casting what-ifs

David Ward wanted Johnny Depp for Joe Kane – Depp declined, not a big sports fan.

Over-acting award

Latimer (Andrew Bryniarski) – no debate needed, he just owns it.

Best "that guy"
  • J.C. Quinn as Joe Kane's dad – also Elmo the chef from 'Vision Quest' who gave the big Pele speech.
  • Dwayne Davis as Alvin Mack – also in Necessary Roughness and Beetlejuice.
Re-casting couch
  • Young Ben Affleck as Joe Kane – right around 'Dazed and Confused' era, big enough, right age.
  • Robert Duvall as Coach Winters – coming off 'Days of Thunder' era.
Half-assed (internet) research
  • Latimer and Alvin Mack actors played teammates in Necessary Roughness.
  • Omar Epps, Kristy Swanson, and Andrew Bryniarski were all in 'Higher Learning' together.
  • Craig Sheffer claims he threw 65 yards on the Disney lot to get cast.
  • The actual quarterback stand-in fumbled for real on the last play and improvised a sidearm pass to Omar Epps.
  • Alabama and Oklahoma declined to be in the movie; Mississippi State said yes.
Apex Mountain
  • Omar Epps – yes, peaks here with Juice the year before and 'Higher Learning' coming up.
  • Andrew Bryniarski (Latimer) – absolutely yes.
  • Craig Sheffer – yes; also apex mountain for Craig Sheffer tall tales.
  • Steroids in movies – maybe; the only competition is Drago in 'Rocky IV'.
Picking nits
  • Ray changing the play for Darnell after 90 minutes of hating him is completely unbelievable.
  • The urine replacement procedure is medically impossible.
  • The forward pass/fumble in the final play – should have been an incomplete pass, play dead, ESU loses.
  • What conference was ESU in? They play Michigan, Iowa, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech – makes no sense.
Sequel, prequel, prestige TV or untouchable?

Emphatic yes – 'This would clearly be a Netflix show'.

(Probably) unanswerable questions
  • Did Brett Favre model his career after Joe Kane?
  • Most depressing sports movie injury: Alvin Mack vs. Booby Miles vs. Lance Harbor?
  • Was Joe Kane a first round pick? (Consensus: no – third to fifth round, comparable to Jake Plummer).
What memorabilia would you want (or not want!) from the movie?
  • Latimer's entire urine sample replacement kit (Bill's pick).
  • The Mack family door knocker (Russillo and Kyle's pick).
  • Latimer's ankh necklace and neck roll.
Who won the movie?

Latimer (Andrew Bryniarski) – unanimous; first thing you think of when you think of this movie.
