Notes

  • Budget: $27 million; grossed $161.8 million worldwide.
  • Based on the novel 'The Dark Fields' by Alan Glynn. Retitled 'Limitless' in December 2010 before release.
  • Shia LaBeouf was initially signed for the lead role in 2008 but had to drop out.
  • Bradley Cooper came off 'The Hangover' (2009) with massive audience goodwill. 'Limitless' proved he could take a B-movie and elevate it to an A-movie.
  • A 'Limitless' TV series aired on CBS but was canceled after one season.
  • The film spawned a knockoff supplement market – fake NZT-like pills sold via YouTube videos and online ads.

Roger Ebert's review

Quote from Rog's review:

Limitless only uses 15, maybe 20 percent of its brain. Still, that's more than a lot of movies.
  • Ebert called it 'not terrifically good, but the premise is intriguing.'
  • Bill: 'What he didn't anticipate is the impact this movie would have on the streamers and on cable. One of the most rewatchable movies of the last 15 years.'
Most re-watchable scene
  • Bill: The Cooper vs. De Niro ending – 'I see everything, Carl. I'm 50 moves ahead of you and everybody else.'
  • Shea: The come-up montage after Eddie first takes NZT – especially the editor's three increasingly excited voicemails.
  • Chris: The montage where Eddie cures cancer, learns piano, and starts day trading.
  • Abbie Cornish chased in Central Park – she takes NZT and slices a guy with a little girl's ice skate.
What aged the best?
  • Bill: The premise ages great every year – the biohacker era makes the 'limitless pill' question more relevant than ever.
  • Shea: The clever plotting around Vernon's death and finding the stash, and the line that 'the pill works better if you're already smart'.
  • Chris: The discovery of the NZT community – people who've been taking it are all dead or sick.
  • The limitless knockoff supplement market – fake NZT pills and YouTube ads.
What aged the worst?
  • Bill: De Niro on autopilot – 'I don't feel like he's 100% into this movie'.
  • Bill: The movie should have been rated R – more violence, more sex. Shea disagrees.
  • The 'Limitless' CBS TV series – canceled after one season.
  • Bill: If you really break down Eddie's 'sounding smart' speeches, they don't hold up.
Casting what-ifs
  • Shia LaBeouf was initially signed in 2008 – Bill: 'This movie just doesn't work with Shia LaBeouf.'
  • Best all-time pick: Shea picks Will Smith (circa 2004). Bill and Chris pick Tom Cruise (circa 1992-93, The Firm era).
  • Chris: Jeremy Strong would be amazing. Shea: Jake Gyllenhaal would be great.
Over-acting award

Bill: Tomas Arana as the Man in Tan Coat – 'Really trying to look evil as he's running'.

Best "that guy"
  • Andrew Howard as Gennady the Russian loan shark.
  • Tomas Arana as the running bad guy/bodyguard.
Best "heat check" performance
  • Bill: Andrew Howard (Gennady) – 'I like when the limitless drug kicks in and he's got nicer clothes'.
  • Chris: Johnny Whitworth (Vernon Gant).
  • Shea: Abbie Cornish.
Half-assed (internet) research
  • The film's visual techniques include fractal zooming, jump cutting, out-of-body scenes, and motion control photography.
  • Bill: 'Not surprisingly, not an incredible amount of research to be found on this movie.'
Apex Mountain
  • Bradley Cooper – Bill says American Sniper, not this, but 'Limitless' is his action Apex Mountain.
  • Abbie Cornish – Bill says yes, 'this is right when she was having a moment, then Brie Larson market-corrected the shit out of her'.
  • Chris: Apex Mountain for the 'guy version of the 'Pretty Woman' glow-up montage'.
Picking nits
  • Chris: The cops don't frisk Cooper at the murder scene – he has $18,000 and drugs in his back pocket.
  • Bill: Would the New York Post really profile Eddie after only four days of stock trading success?
  • Shea: If Eddie was so smart, why didn't he just pay off the Russian loan shark on time?
  • Bill: Three dead guys in Eddie's apartment, tied to arms dealers, and a year later he's running for Senate.
Sequel, prequel, prestige TV or untouchable?
  • Unanimous yes – either a sequel movie or a 10-episode Netflix series, but Bradley Cooper must be involved.
  • Chris's pitch: Cooper becomes the new Carl Van Loon figure, and a new guy shows up on NZT-2.
  • Bill: 'We have so many sequels we don't need. This one is like, I'm ready to go back in this world.'
(Probably) unanswerable questions
  • If you could take anyone at any point in their life and put them in 'Limitless' – who's the best choice? Shea: Will Smith circa 2003-04. Bill and Chris: Tom Cruise circa 1992-93.
  • The cops are coming – where do you hide NZT in your apartment? Was the oven the best place?
What memorabilia would you want (or not want!) from the movie?
  • Bill: The prop bag of fake NZT pills, or an Eddie Mora for Senate poster.
  • Chris: Eddie's novel – 'I definitely want his novel'.
Who won the movie?

Bradley Cooper – unanimously.
