'Insidious'

The Ringer's Bill Simmons, Sean Fennessey, and Chris Ryan realize it's not the house that's haunted, it's the pod. They head deep into the Further to rewatch the chilling horror film 'Insidious,' starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, and Ty Simpkins.

Notes

  • $1.5 million budget, made $99.5 million at the box office – shot in only 3 weeks; might be the cheapest movie they've ever done on The Rewatchables.
  • Joseph Bishara composed the score (39 violins) AND played the Red-Faced Demon – 'a Bo Jackson level performance'.
  • The film helped end the torture porn era in horror and ushered in the 'there's something wrong with the house' era, planting the seeds for Blumhouse's business model.
  • Rose Byrne was 'on a strong pace to win Rewatchable 2021 MVP' with three Rose Byrne movies before April.
  • Bill's son Ben confirmed at the end of the pod that no kid would ever voluntarily go into an attic.

Roger Ebert's review

Quote from Rog's review:

It depends on characters, atmosphere, sneaky happenings, and mounting dread. Not terrifically good but moviegoers will get what they're expecting.

Sean says that's accurate – 'a very satisfying down the middle movie... just a very well-made low budget horror movie'.

Most re-watchable scene
  • The gas mask seance scene – the face licker shows up, Elise's team has old-school analog equipment.
  • The first demon reveal – hard cut showing the demon behind Patrick Wilson at the kitchen table with a loud bang.
  • Moving to the new house and realizing the haunting followed them (Tiny Tim needle drop plays).
  • 'It's not the house that's haunted, it's your son' – the swerve moment.
  • Rose Byrne discovering the handprint on the child.
  • Kid falls off the ladder in the attic – sets everything up.
What aged the best?
  • The music/score by Joseph Bishara – Bill's son thinks it's the single scariest score other than 'The Shining'.
  • Patrick Wilson's horror IMDB – 'Insidious', Conjuring, basically 'horror daddy' / the Scream King.
  • What they did with the $1.5 million budget – incredible amount squeezed from it.
  • Rose Byrne's performance – utterly believable especially in the early scenes.
  • Barbara Hershey – something super creepy about her; effective callback to The Entity (1982).
  • The creepy house – Bill rates it 8.5/10 on the creepy house scale (Amityville Horror being a 10).
What aged the worst?
  • The first 60% of the film is better than the last 40% – the setup is better than the resolution/payoff.
  • The special effects / low budget – the seance scene where guys get thrown across the room and you can see Patrick Wilson just jumping backwards, 'like pro wrestling in the 80s'.
Casting what-ifs
  • Ethan Hawke turned down the lead role – one year later he took Sinister, which Bill says is not as good.
  • The film was originally going to be named 'The Further' – Chris thinks 'Insidious' is a better horror title.
Over-acting award
  • Lin Shaye as Elise – she brings a lot to it (Chris's pick).
  • The Face Licker / Red-Faced Demon – 'kind of going for it' (Sean's pick).
Best "that guy"
  • Lin Shaye (Elise) – Bill says she might be his all-time #1 'that guy'; also Magda in There's Something About Mary, appeared in Kingpin and A Nightmare on Elm Street; sister of Bob Shaye (New Line Cinema founder).
  • Barbara Crampton mentioned alongside Shaye as the two iconic horror actresses still working.
Best "heat check" performance
  • Specs and Tucker (Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson).
  • Barbara Hershey – 'she left it on the table, it was hers to win'.
  • Joseph Bishara – nominated for the Red-Faced Demon.
Re-casting couch
  • Bill wished the kid (Ty Simpkins) had been someone who became famous later – like Jacob Elordi or Noah Centineo.
  • Otherwise Bill liked how the movie was cast.
Half-assed (internet) research
  • In Josh's classroom scene, James Wan put Easter eggs – his name on the chalkboard, cast member names, Saw references.
  • The old woman demon was played by a man – it wasn't until the sequel that they decided the character was a man dressed as a woman.
Apex Mountain
  • James Wan – debated; already had Saw, but this made 100x its budget and opened the door for everything after; counter-argument that Conjuring is his actual apex.
  • Joseph Bishara – yes, scored the film AND played the demon; 'like if Jonny Greenwood also acted in There Will Be Blood'.
  • Astral traveling – having a big moment, also featured in Behind Her Eyes on Netflix.
  • Patrick Wilson – no; Rose Byrne – no.
Picking nits
  • Rose Byrne is a terrible mother – protection standards not high enough; everyone should sleep in the same room.
  • Patrick Wilson staying late to 'grade papers' when his wife says there's a demon – 'the divorce papers are signed the first time he doesn't come home'.
  • How do they not notice the weird figure in the different pictures?
  • Little kids do NOT go into attics – confirmed by Bill's son Ben.
  • Elise's rate of $600 per exorcism – not enough to pay the bills; Sean jokes 'They have a Patreon pod too'.
Sequel, prequel, prestige TV or untouchable?

Essentially already done – Haunting of Hill House on Netflix is like a blown-out version of 'Insidious'.

(Probably) unanswerable questions
  • Why does the wife always know something is wrong with the house before the husband does?
  • Where does Dalton rank in the possessed kid power rankings? Regan from 'The Exorcist' is #1; Danny from 'The Shining'; Chris says Dalton is 'not that impressive' since he spends most of the movie in a coma.
Who won the movie?
  • Bill: James Wan – 'completely changes the course of his career and the horror movie genre with one choice'.
  • Chris: Rose Byrne – 'a really, really good mother and terror performance'.
  • Sean: Lin Shaye – goes from 'that guy woman' to a linchpin of horror movies for 10 years.
