Notes

  • $16.5 million budget, made $67 million domestic – a slow sleeper that grew via word of mouth and home video.
  • Dr. Evil is a Lorne Michaels impersonation, famously originated by Dana Carvey behind the scenes at SNL. Myers taking it caused a legendary rift.
  • Jim Carrey was wanted to play Dr. Evil but was unavailable due to Liar Liar.
  • The movie only made $67M at the box office but became a VHS/DVD juggernaut – one of the most successful videos of the 1990s.
  • The sequel made 5x as much ($300M+ domestically).
  • Daniel Craig acknowledged the Austin Powers series forced the James Bond franchise to become much more serious.
  • Myers created Austin Powers based on a fake 1960s rock band called Ming Tea that he started with Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs.
  • George Harrison's last letter was written to Mike Myers as Austin Powers during production of the third film. He asked for a Mini-Me doll.
  • Joe Son (Random Task) is serving a lifetime prison sentence.
  • They wanted Austin to drink a Zima in the Vegas bar scene, but Zima figured out they were mocking the brand, so they switched to Tab Cola.
  • Christian Slater had a scene that was cut from the film.
  • The shushing scene between Dr. Evil and Scott Evil was apparently improvised.

Roger Ebert's review

Quote from Rog's review:

A funny movie that only gets funnier the more familiar you are with James Bond movies, all the Bond clones, and countless other 1960s films.

Ebert gave it a solid 3 stars, appreciating the film's deep knowledge of its source material.

Most re-watchable scene
  • The group therapy scene where Dr. Evil gives his childhood monologue – 'in the running for greatest four minutes of a comedy in the 90s.'
  • The cryo facility wake-up scene (the long pee, the penis enlarger kit, 'I'm having difficulty controlling the volume of my voice').
  • Mustafa's murder scene in Las Vegas ('You shot me right in the arm!').
  • Austin being naked / sausage scene with Vanessa.
  • Scott Evil saying 'why don't you just shoot him now?'
What aged the best?
  • Dr. Evil being a Lorne Michaels impersonation – every Dr. Evil scene is 'just lights out.'
  • Elizabeth Hurley – 'still aging wonderfully.'
  • Will Ferrell as Mustafa – 'no Anchorman without this movie.'
  • The steamroller slow-motion murder scene.
  • The five stages of defrosting.
  • Character names: Basil Exposition, Alotta Fagina, Random Task.
What aged the worst?
  • The parody of old Bond movies – hosts wonder if people under 35 even get the references anymore.
  • Austin sexually harassing Vanessa – though the movie handles it better than expected.
  • Robert Wagner being in the movie.
Casting what-ifs
  • Jim Carrey was wanted to play Dr. Evil but was unavailable.
  • Dana Carvey originated the Lorne Michaels impression – caused a huge rift when Myers took it.
  • Colin Quinn turned down the role of Scott Evil and later regretted it.
  • Pamela Anderson apparently auditioned for Elizabeth Hurley's role.
Best "that guy"
  • Charles Napier – from Silence of the Lambs (the last prison guard).
  • Larry Thomas (the Soup Nazi) as the blackjack dealer.
  • Fabiana Udenio (Alotta Fagina) – 'became that guy from this movie.'
Over-acting award

Alotta Fagina (Fabiana Udenio) in the hot tub scene – 'bizarre' and 'not funny,' the only scene that doesn't quite work.

Best "heat check" performance
  • Bill's pick: Seth Green.
  • Chris and Sean's pick: Will Ferrell as Mustafa.
  • Other candidates: Tom Arnold, Mimi Rogers, Mindy Sterling as Frau Farbissina.
Re-casting couch

Robert Wagner (Number Two) – Rob Lowe replacing him in the sequel was perfect ('Robert Wagner 2.0').

Half-assed (internet) research
  • Joe Son (Random Task) is serving a lifetime prison sentence.
  • AOL version 3.0 is on Austin's computer.
  • Austin's car: 1961 Jaguar E-Type Open Two Seater Series 1.
  • Jay Roach did the AOL product placement to get a free year of service.
  • George Harrison's last letter was written to Mike Myers as Austin Powers.
  • Myers created the character based on a fake 1960s band called Ming Tea with Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs.
Apex Mountain
  • Mike Myers – Austin Powers 2 (1999) is his Apex Mountain, when he takes the torch from Jim Carrey.
  • New Line Cinema – 1997 is their Apex Mountain year (Austin Powers, 'Boogie Nights', Wag the Dog).
  • Elizabeth Hurley – yes, this is her Apex Mountain.
  • Bond parodies – yes.
  • Frau Farbissina (Mindy Sterling) – probably her Apex Mountain.
Who won the movie?

Clearly Mike Myers – unanimous, no debate.

Picking nits
  • Dr. Evil builds a cryogenic rocket out of a Bob's Big Boy statue on top of a hip London nightclub.
  • Some iconic sequences have been ruined by overexposure – 'Do I make you horny?' said millions of times in bars, 'one million dollars' feels overplayed.
What memorabilia would you want (or not want!) from the movie?
  • Chris: The Swedish-made penis enlarger.
  • Bill: Dr. Evil's suit/outfit.
(Probably) unanswerable questions

Is this the single best movie franchise from a PR standpoint? Three movies, all successful, left on top, didn't overstay its welcome.

Producer review
  • Craig controversially prefers Austin Powers 2 and 3 over the original – he saw them first.
  • Bill's ranking: 2, 1, 3. Sean's ranking: 1, 2, 3.
