'Shooter'

The Ringer's Bill Simmons, Chris Ryan, and Shea Serrano calculate humidity, elevation, temperature, wind, and spindrift to rewatch the 2007 action thriller 'Shooter,' starring Mark Wahlberg, Danny Glover, and Kate Mara.

Notes

  • $61 million budget, grossed $95.7 million.
  • Based on the novel Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter.
  • In development for 12 years with 7 screenwriters. William Goldman was the script doctor.
  • Changed from PG-13 to R after Wahlberg signed on.
  • Wahlberg lost 20 pounds for the role and trained with US Marine scout sniper Patrick Garrity.
  • Essentially 'The Fugitive but instead of a doctor, he's a sniper.'
  • The political subtext is deeper than expected: 9/11 Commission Report, 'JFK' assassination references, Abu Ghraib, Dick Cheney analog (Ned Beatty).
  • Foreshadowed 'John Wick': Swagger is mad about his dog being murdered.
  • Earlier versions conceived Bob Lee Swagger as older – Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford, Harrison Ford, and Keanu Reeves all passed.
  • The hosts strongly advocate for Shooter 2 from Netflix.
  • The featured sniper rifle: the CheyTac M200 Intervention – 'the Ferrari of sniper rifles.'
  • Ebert did not review this movie.

Categories

Most re-watchable scene
  • Bill: The last 25 minutes – Wahlberg killing everyone, the mountain scene, the log cabin, the final sniper resolution.
  • Chris: The assassination scene in 'Philadelphia' – the setup, suspense, flags waving, remote-controlled sniper rifle reveal.
  • Shea: The entire escape sequence after Swagger gets shot through to the tugboat in the river.
What aged the best?
  • The concept of Swagger being mad about his dog being murdered – foreshadowed the entire 'John Wick' series.
  • 'Evil Danny Glover' – nobody thought to cast him as a villain before this.
  • Nick Memphis as a character name (and Bob Lee Swagger).
  • Michael Pena's performance and character arc.
  • 'Philadelphia' as a sniper/conspiracy/assassination city.
  • The opening Ethiopia scene.
What aged the worst?
  • The runtime: 126 minutes, should have been ~110.
  • The middle section with Kate Mara involving 'a lot of amateur surgery.'
  • Kate Mara's Kentucky accent (fades as the movie goes on).
  • The implied assault on Kate Mara – hinted at but never addressed, she seems fine after.
  • Wahlberg's ponytail (fake-looking wig).
Over-acting award

Ned Beatty – 'Going hard. Full Network.' Spit flying out of his mouth.

Best "that guy"
  • Shea: Rhona Mitra (the FBI woman working with Memphis – kept expecting her to turn evil).
  • A.C. Peterson (the evil Philly cop who shoots Swagger).
Apex Mountain
  • Mark Wahlberg: Coming off 'The Departed' then Shooter – the 20-year Wahlberg action movie run officially begins. Though Ted (2012) might actually be his true apex.
  • Sniper movies: Yes – the best sniper movie.
  • Homemade IVs: Absolutely yes.
  • Antoine Fuqua: No – 'Training Day'.
Picking nits
  • The military just abandoning Swagger and his spotter in Ethiopia.
  • Why would conspiracy-minded Swagger agree to help the government?
  • Blood-clotting supplies conveniently in the trunk of a stolen FBI car.
  • Philly to Kentucky is a 10-hour drive while bleeding out; Tennessee to Bozeman is 26 hours while most wanted.
  • Swagger at Home Depot buying napalm ingredients without anyone noticing.
  • Danny Glover needing to take a photo of a license plate instead of memorizing 6 characters.
  • Michael Pena being the only person in the entire FBI investigating.
Re-casting couch
  • Bill: Wouldn't touch the casting – likes it all.
  • Earlier versions: Eastwood, Redford, Ford, and Keanu Reeves all passed. Bill jokes Keanu 'knew his destiny was something better' ('John Wick').
Half-assed (internet) research
  • 12 years in development with 7 screenwriters. William Goldman was script doctor.
  • Assassination scenes filmed at Independence National Historical Park, 'Philadelphia'.
  • Final scene filmed at Mammoth Lakes, California.
  • The CheyTac M200 Intervention sniper rifle – 'the Ferrari of sniper rifles.'
  • Wahlberg uses both eyes while sniping (controversy in the sniper community).
  • Precisionremotes.com (used in the film) is a real website.
(Probably) unanswerable questions
  • Team Kate or Team Rooney Mara? (All three pick Kate.)
  • How did Shooter 2 not happen? Wahlberg blew it by not building a franchise like Keanu did with 'John Wick'.
  • Should this movie have been called Swagger instead of Shooter? (Consensus: yes.)
  • What kind of money is Swagger working with? He shops a lot but can't use credit cards.
What memorabilia would you want (or not want!) from the movie?
  • Bill: The big sniper gun from the end (CheyTac M200).
  • Chris: Wahlberg's chopped-off ponytail.
  • Shea: The 'assassination suicide device' strapped to Nick Memphis.
Sequel, prequel, prestige TV or untouchable?

Already happened: the USA Network Shooter TV series with Ryan Phillippe (Bill and Shea say it was surprisingly good). Eventually cancelled.

Who won the movie?

Mark Wahlberg – Bill briefly considered Danny Glover because Evil Glover is so enjoyable, but Wahlberg edges him out.
