Notes

  • Made on a $190 million budget and grossed over $1.5 billion – most successful Fast movie ever and 9th highest-grossing movie ever at the time.
  • Paul Walker died November 30, 2013, halfway through filming – his brothers Caleb and Cody and actor John Brotherton served as stand-ins with Walker's face superimposed via Weta Digital VFX (350 effects shots).
  • The Rock's limited screen time was due to a scheduling conflict with Hercules.
  • The parachute car drop was done practically – cars dropped from a Lockheed C-130 from 12,000 feet over the Sonoran Desert.
  • 340 cars used in the film; 230 were destroyed.
  • 'See You Again' by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth became the most-viewed YouTube video ever in July 2017.
  • The Lykan HyperSport used in the building jump: only 7 made, worth $3.4 million each.
  • Second most pirated movie ever with almost 45 million streams in 2015.

Categories

Most re-watchable scene
  • The mountain/parachute car drop – cars dropped from 12,000 feet, Brian fighting Tony Jaa on the bus, Brian running up the dangling bus and jumping to Letty's car.
  • The Abu Dhabi double-building jump – Ronda Rousey vs. Letty fight, driving the Lykan HyperSport through three skyscrapers.
  • The ending/Paul Walker farewell – 'See You Again' plays, Paul Walker montage, Dom and Brian driving side by side, 'For Paul' title card. Never loses its emotional impact.
  • Statham vs. The Rock – Shaw shows up at Hobbs' FBI office, grenade goes off, both fly out a window and land on a car.
What aged the best?
  • Paul Walker – 'Fucking love that guy.' Genuinely missed. The best handsome blond guy who wasn't a dick in movies.
  • Kurt Russell as Mr. Nobody – great performance.
  • 'See You Again' – became an iconic song and the most-viewed YouTube video ever.
  • The facial recognition/CGI technology used to recreate Walker still holds up.
What aged the worst?
  • The entire Deckard Shaw arc – murders 20+ policemen and Han, then in Fast 8 he's having Coronas at Dom's barbecue. 'The elephant in the room.'
  • Letty's amnesia plot lasting ~2 years.
  • Djimon Hounsou as Mose Jakande – great actor but underdeveloped villain.
  • The dark, hard-to-see LA ending with too many elements.
  • The Rock's daughter subplot – unnecessary attempt to humanize him.
Casting what-ifs
  • Denzel Washington turned down Mr. Nobody before Kurt Russell took it – both hosts are devastated by this.
  • Jason Statham was originally offered Owen Shaw in Fast 6 but couldn't do it; they figured out how to work him in as the big brother instead.
Best "that guy"

Tony Jaa – both hosts agree

Over-acting award

The Rock – 'Really dials it up,' almost in 'professional wrestling mode' during the Statham interrogation scene

Best "heat check" performance

Ronda Rousey – in her 'Mike Tyson stage,' not a great actress but the fight with Letty was everything they wanted

Re-casting couch

Denzel Washington as Mr. Nobody – would have added 'a whole extra level of weight'

Apex Mountain
  • Michelle Rodriguez / Letty – 'Never looked better,' great fight with Rousey, makes every scene better. Both believe she's the best actor in the franchise.
  • Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth – yes.
  • Abu Dhabi as a movie location – yes.
  • Action movies with bald stars – Vin Diesel, Statham, The Rock, Tyrese, and Djimon Hounsou all in one movie.
Picking nits
  • Elena's ~15-month pregnancy – not showing at all in Fast 7 but has a baby in Fast 8. The math doesn't add up.
  • After the head-on car crash, cops rappel from the ceiling and Mr. Nobody is there – how did they know they'd end up in that exact spot?
(Probably) unanswerable questions
  • Is Race Wars a real thing? If so, why isn't it on ESPN2?
  • How does Dom know so many super-connected powerful people? He went from a street racer to having billionaire friends.
  • How did everyone on Dom's team get so good at fighting?
  • Could/should Brian ever come back via CGI?
Sequel, prequel, prestige TV or untouchable?

No – 'The answer is always no.' Don't mess with the franchise.

Who won the movie?

Paul Walker – 'He's the one you're most excited to get to spend some time with' when rewatching.

Half-assed (internet) research
  • Brian and Dom's emotional conversation scene was actually a deleted scene from 'Fast Five', repurposed.
  • In the parking garage fight, Easter eggs reference The Transporter movies: the BMW from Transporter and the Audi from Transporter 2.
  • Gal Gadot had filmed flashback scenes that were cut from the final film.
