Notes

  • Box office: $162 million (mostly overseas).
  • 400-day production – Guinness World Record for the longest continuous film shoot.
  • Kubrick had Cruise do 95 takes of walking through a door. The Pollack pool table scene took 3 weeks, 200 takes.
  • Kubrick found his story by psychoanalyzing Cruise and Kidman, basically being their marriage counselor.
  • The naval officer scene with Kidman was filmed for 6 days; Kubrick wouldn't let her tell Cruise anything about it.
  • Shot entirely in London pretending to be New York City.
  • 'Harford' is a nod to Harrison Ford, who was a top choice at one point.
  • Cruise and Kidman divorced two years after the film's release.
  • Originally part of the 'Rewatchables 1999' series on Luminary. Episode #301.

Categories

Most re-watchable scene
  • Mallory: The Sandor/Alice dance at the opening party – 'a few of the sexiest minutes in movie history.'
  • Bill, Chris, Sean: The stoned Kidman confronting Cruise about fidelity – 'one of the great couple fights in movies.' Frank Ocean sampled Alice's speech.
  • Bill: The Fidelio party/orgy scene – 'when he shows up at the gate... they're really going for it.'
  • Sean: The Sidney Pollack pool table scene at the end.
What aged the best?
  • The running cultural reference of 'the 'Eyes Wide Shut' party' – Bill: '20 years of that. It's a go-to joke.'
  • Late 1990s Nicole Kidman – 'just jaw-dropping. All time.'
  • Sydney Pollack in suspenders / his performance.
  • Chris: 'The movie itself ages the best. There's nothing of 1999 that is specific.'
  • The masks / timeless secret society aspect.
What aged the worst?
  • The gay bashing/frat guys scene – 'just weird.'
  • Cruise and Kidman divorcing two years later.
  • The orgy is too tame – 'we're in a Pornhub era.'
  • Dr. Bill's prowess as a medical professional – 'His exam of an overdose victim is here is a fleece blanket.'
The most 1999 thing about this movie

The Cruise-Kidman marriage – 'the iconic marriage of that decade.'

Roger Ebert's review

Quote from Rog's review:

Kubrick's great achievement in this film is to find and hold an odd, unsettling, sometimes erotic tone.
Casting what-ifs
  • In the 1970s, Kubrick wanted Woody Allen as the protagonist.
  • 1980s: Steve Martin – was going to be 'a sex comedy with a wild and somber streak.'
  • Harrison Ford was a top choice ('Harford' is a nod to him).
  • Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger were considered.
  • Harvey Keitel was originally cast as Ziegler but left/was removed.
  • Val Kilmer sent 30 unsolicited audition tapes to Kubrick.
Best "that guy"
  • Rade Serbedzija (Milich the costume shop owner).
  • Todd Field (Nick Nightingale) – 'goes on to direct Little Children and In the Bedroom.'
  • Alan Cumming (the hotel desk clerk) – 'facial expressions, he's going for it.'
Best "heat check" performance

Chris: Alan Cumming at the hotel – 'showing up, facial expressions, he's going for it.'

Half-assed (internet) research
  • Cate Blanchett was the voice of the mysterious masked woman at the orgy.
  • Cruise and Kidman sued Star magazine for writing there were sex therapists coaching them.
  • They shot in the Rothschild mansion.
  • Pollack was rumored to be a Warner Brothers spy and 'the Cruise whisperer.'
  • Gary Oldman's story about Keitel losing it on the 88th take of opening a door.
  • Two different actresses play Mandy across the film.
Apex Mountain
  • The 'Eyes Wide Shut party' as a cultural reference.
  • Orgies in general.
  • Movies filmed in London pretending to be in New York.
Picking nits
  • Alice getting that high off a couple hits of one joint.
  • Domino's apartment being an extreme shithole.
  • Dr. Bill wears Uggs at home.
  • Bill ordering just 'a beer.'
(Probably) unanswerable questions
  • Was Kubrick's final cut the version we saw? He died before release.
  • What did the ending mean? Why is the mask on the pillow?
  • Was the Milich costume shop scene a setup?
  • How did they know Bill was an intruder at the orgy?
  • Is Nick Nightingale dead?
Who won the movie?

Kubrick – 'There's no way this movie ever should have worked in a million years. It's so fucking weird.'
