Douglas Rain
Canadian Shakespearean actor who voiced HAL 9000 in '2001: A Space Odyssey' (1968) and '2010: The Year We Make Contact' (1984). Kubrick rejected Martin Balsam as 'a little too New Yorkish' and ended up with Rain's calm, soft, faintly-chilling tone – Craig Horlbeck argues HAL's voice is the single thing the entire film hangs on.
