The New Categories Selection Show
In a special edition of 'The Rewatchables', The Ringer's Bill Simmons, Chris Ryan, and Sean Fennessey read through listener submissions for new categories and select their favorites to make the show.
Notes
- Special non-movie episode: the hosts read through hundreds of listener-submitted suggestions for new podcast categories as the show approaches its 250th episode.
- New category added: Best Needle Drop (the Slow Ride Award) – best song usage in the film. Bill can't believe they hadn't thought of this in 240+ episodes. Sean notes they inevitably spend 5 minutes discussing songs in movies anyway.
- New category added: Stephen A. Smith Hottest Take Award – one host gives their hottest take about the movie. Bill suggests it goes near the end of the episode.
- New category added: Big Kahuna Burger Award – best food or drink in the film. Bill calls it 'a no brainer' that's 'just being added to the podcast.' Sean says 'This is a tasty burger' might be his favorite line reading in movie history.
- New category added: 'Den of Thieves' Benihana Award – scene-stealing location. Bill notes they've been 'a little light on locations' across 250 episodes. Chris's example: the bar in 'Goodfellas' where Tommy kills Spider.
- New category added: Best Racehorse Name – pick the best quote from the movie that would work as a racehorse name. Bill calls this 'the single best idea anyone had.' Sean notes 'it wouldn't be surprising at all if a horse that won the Derby was called The Action Is The Juice.'
- New category added: Great Shot Gordo – most cinematic shot, named after cinematographer Gordon Willis. Chris Ryan suggests the name. Bill notes not every movie will have one, making it conditional.
- New category added: Just One Oscar – the movie only gets one Oscar, who gets it and why? Sean says it should be on every episode. Bill agrees it can be a quick 30-second category.
- New category added: Hall of Fame Plaque – like baseball players choosing which hat to wear on their Hall of Fame plaque, which movie would an actor/director/writer choose to represent them? Different from Apex Mountain: Apex is about peak juice in the moment, Hall of Fame is about legacy.
- New category added: The Next Day (Andy & Red Zihuatanejo Award) – what happens the day after the movie ends? Sean calls it 'a brilliant category idea.' Bill's example: Al Pacino's character in Heat is very likely suspended the next day after letting De Niro escape. They also riff on ET: Elliott becomes a conspiracy theorist because the government won't acknowledge what happened.
- New category added: Best Quote (Book About Metals Award) – the belatedly best quote that gets better on the 40th viewing. Chris's example from 'A Few Good Men': 'You cut these guys loose' becomes more exciting than 'I want the truth' after many rewatches. Bill blames Mallory for originally killing the best quote category by doing 38 quotes in one episode.
- New category added: Sequel, Prequel, Prestige TV, All Black Cast, or Untouchable – updated version of the old Netflix category. You have to pick one of five options. Sean loves the All Black Cast option because 'most of the time we say no, it's perfect as is, but when we don't, that leads to some of the best conversations.'
- New category added: Would This Movie Be Better With... – inspired by a listener suggesting Wayne Jenkins from We Own This City. Bill's list: Wayne Jenkins, Danny Trejo, Catherine Hahn, Steve Buscemi, Sam Jackson, or Philip Baker Hall. Sean insists JT Walsh be added too.
- New category added: Best Double Feature – what movie pairs best with the one being discussed? Sean says 'This is literally how I think about every night of my life.' Chris calls both Great Shot Gordo and the Double Feature Award 'Sean Fennessey Awards.'
- New category added: Coach Finstock Award for Life Lessons – is there a life lesson from this movie? Bill says a couple of people suggested it, noting they did this for the very first Heat podcast and for 'Casino'.
- New category added: Memorabilia – what piece of memorabilia do you want from this movie?
- New category added: Vincent Chase / Dracula the Musical Award – when a character presents art within a movie (a play, a song, a documentary), is it actually good? Named after the 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' vampire musical. Producer Craig says he loves it 'with every fiber of my being.'
- Recasting Couch updated: listener Patrick suggests recasting with current 2022 actors rather than actors from the era the movie was made. All three hosts agree. Chris admits he has 'a bad tendency to just say Miles Teller for everything.' Sean notes it's 'a good way for us to get Sydney Sweeney in a lot more movies.'
- Teddy KGB Award replaces the Judd Nelson Award – for the actor doing their own thing regardless of whether it vibes with the rest of the film. Chris says they tried to get Judd Nelson off the ground but 'it never really took off.'
- Conditional/occasional categories discussed: Judith Myers Award (character killed first in a horror movie), Tony Snell Award (actor most in the movie who did the least – but deemed too obscure), Pee Break (best time to go pee during the movie), Good Hang/Bad Hang, CP3 Award for Worst Meltdown, Jalen Rose Keep Getting Them Checks Award (actor least interested in being there), and the Witness Award (scene you'd want to be close to while it's happening).
- Best That Guy replaces Joey Pants as the name – Chris says 'that guy is a great category' but most listeners found the Joey Pants name confusing.
- Bill says the future of the podcast is having about 2/3 staple categories and the other 1/3 rotating in and out depending on the movie. Chris compares it to Heat culture: 'We're always finding new guys to come in off the bench.'
- Funniest rejected submission: Adam Klein from Denver's 'Dick of Destiny' category about when 'the sex must be so good that it drives a movie character to be with or stay with somebody that is otherwise completely horrible.' His examples include Ginger in 'Casino' and 'Forrest Gump'. Sean accuses Bill of writing the email himself.
- Multiple basketball-themed rejections: Ben Simmons Award (actor who refused to use their skill set), Russell Westbrook Award (if you cut this scene the movie's better – Bill vetoes: 'I don't really want to have Russell Westbrook in the Rewatchables'), James Harden Award (actor least interested in being there), Chris Paul Award (worst third-act performance).
- Overacting award discussion: Devin Kuchinka suggests naming it after all honorees – the Mark Ruffalo, Saul Rubenek, Vincent Hanna, Linda Partridge Award. Chris suggests Producer Craig create an audio montage of people screaming to play at the start of every overacting segment.
- Apex Mountain confusion: multiple listeners asked for clarification, leading to Kyle Barlow's Entourage explanation – after Aquaman's success, Vince could throw scripts in the trash. Bill says 'We're definitely not doing that, but it was the first thing I've ever seen that accurately explained Apex Mountain.'
- Episode closes with the announcement that 'Cop Land' will be the next episode, as a tribute to Ray Liotta who had just passed away. Chris says 'Cop Land' 'is coming off a very strong 2022 cable run' and is 'an incredible 4:00 PM on the day before basketball starts.'
