A 2025 Rewatchables Mailbag

Bill Simmons reads listener questions and submissions for new categories with co-hosts Chris Ryan and Craig Horlbeck.

Notes

  • Special mailbag episode – no movie or categories. Bill, CR, and Craig field listener questions and new category ideas sent to therewatchables33@gmail.com.
  • New category ideas discussed and accepted: the Dan Campbell Scale ('holy shit, are they really going for this right now?' rated by fourth-down yardage), the Sean Penn 'I Brought My Own Pack' Award for on-screen smoking excellence, the 'porn parody' check (Bill found a Reddit thread of 150 real porn parodies including Shaving Ryan's Privates, Legs Wide Shut, Goodwill Humping), and the Brock Landers/Chest Rockwell Award for best character name.
  • New category ideas kept in the back pocket: the Lieutenant Weinberg Drive-By Shooting Award (unnecessarily calling someone out), the Jules Winfield That Guy Graduation Award (when a that-guy becomes a real name – Sam Jackson in 'Pulp Fiction' being the all-time version), the 'What is the perfect age to see this movie?' question, the 'shoehorn a sports scene into this movie' concept, and FanDuel live odds for in-movie scenarios.
  • Daniel Plainview officially added to the 'Would this movie be better with...' category roster alongside Wayne Jenkins.
  • Flex categories: Bill wants two flex spots per pod where hosts can pick from ~20 possible categories instead of running every category every time.
  • Movie requests that generated discussion: 'Rollerball' (50th anniversary, Kevin O'Connell wrote 4-5 emails demanding it), The Hunt for Red October (Bill holding it hostage until CR watches Inside Moves), Aliens, Ghostbusters (40th anniversary missed in 2024), Carlito's Way, Eddie and the Cruisers (not on streaming), Jim Cotta (Bill's deep cut dream pick).
  • Extended Town 2 brainstorming: Shine is grown up (~20) running Charlestown with her boyfriend, Doug is in the Florida Keys, she shows up needing money. CR wants it set in Florida; Bill insists there has to be a heist in Boston. They suggest robbing Harvard.
  • Female Cruise vs. Hanks equivalent: discussed but no definitive answer. Options included Julia Roberts vs. Sandra Bullock, Michelle Pfeiffer vs. Nicole Kidman, Emma Stone vs. Jennifer Lawrence. Craig: 'It's got to be two people – Cruise vs. Hanks is iconic because it's 2.'
  • Cruise vs. Hanks as a podcast co-host: Hanks is the safer bet (better podcaster, can riff). Cruise has higher upside but higher risk. Craig picks Cruise for the entertainment factor.
  • Bill's ongoing joke: he can't remember anything after getting 'the vaccine.'
  • Heat real estate deep dive: CR confirms Neil lives in Malibu Colony (the empty furniture house). The house he sleeps at with Edie is her rental in the Hollywood Hills (maybe Beechwood area). Van Zant's house is in Brentwood.
  • They discussed 'Friday Night Lights' characters as NBA players: Riggins is a rebounder/undersized 4, Saracen is a 5'9 point guard like Jose Alvarado, Boobie Miles is the Kobe who goes down.
  • Spoiler stories: Craig's college professor spoiled 'The Sixth Sense' in a 300-person film class ('Bruce Willis is a ghost'). Craig got up and left before the professor could spoil 'Fight Club'. Bill once ruined 'The Usual Suspects' for Jacko out of spite.
